RACHAEL EVELYN BOOTH
Serenity
The sand lies silent;
Cold blanket on wintered beach.
The waters,
long since receded,
lie frozen and still.
The dark forest stands guard ‘til Spring.
From somewhere in the shadows
A muted cry drifts slowly
A solitary owl,
forever questioning,
calls for its supper
Across the bleakness of the night.
The hour grows late as
A soft chill breeze brushes
The barren
colorless world
in hushed anticipation
Of the magical moment to come.
The frozen sky hangs regally strewn
With the diamonds of the gods
Supported only
by whispered veils
of clouds that frame
The eternal majesty of the heavens.
Suddenly the night holds its breath;
A million unseen eyes turn to watch
As the moon,
in silent swollen splendor,
seeping pale beauty
Rises lovingly to greet the treetops.
The snow-strewn landscape sparkles to life,
Shadowed ghosts awaken and stretch
As the soft cool light
spreads its wings
and embraces
The sleeping Earth below.
