RACHAEL EVELYN BOOTH
One Last Snowfall
Winter fades with desperation.
One last snowfall
Floating in the stillness.
Weighing heavy on the heart.
Spring yearns to awaken.
The buds stir, hidden
Under a frozen blanket.
Where is the sun?
Sleeping dog, so peaceful,
Dreams of nothing
Warm and safe
Unaware of his good fortune.
Only three days more ‘til spring.
Does the north wind know?
I wait for him to leave
So eventual yet so distant.
The pond lies covered
Resting uncaring
Soon the waters will live again
Bringing song to the world.
The otters will play;
The night air will not be so silent
Rich with the chorus of frogs.
Warmth stirs everything.
Still, there is one last snowfall;
Winter will not let us forget.
All things sleep for awhile
Returning to life when it is time.
