Ghosts in the Addict

Something stirs in the darkness

Long thought dead, buried and forgotten,

Packed away in dusty memories.

The dragon stretches with claws yet strong

Readying himself for the battle anew

Knowing he will eventually kill his foe one way or another.

      With fetid teeth razor-honed and

      Hungering for an innocent soul,

He has no conscience beyond his own ends

And cares nothing for the life he would destroy.

The monster has lurked in the shadows

            For far too long now.

He will be free from his aged and rusted chains

Or he will perish and take his victim with him.

The victim prepares for her destined role

Knowing there is no defense left

                  And bracing for the inevitable.

Perhaps there is something more on the other side

                        Perhaps not.

                        It doesn’t really matter.

The pain must stop and the dragon must be fed.
